Buying or Selling a Vehicle? The State of Colorado requires a notarized bill of sale or a bill of sale signed under penalty of perjury in order to transfer title or to issue a temporary permit. The bill of sale below will satisfy that requirement.
Sales and Use Tax
State Sales TaxWhen a vehicle is purchased in Colorado, state sales must be collected. All buyers must pay 2.9% of the purchase price for state sales tax. If the vehicle is purchased from a dealer in Colorado, the dealer will collect the state sales tax and remit it to the state. A receipt for the state sales tax paid will be included with the vehicle title work.
If the vehicle is purchased from a dealer outside Colorado, the dealer may or may not collect the state sales tax for the state where the vehicle was purchased. If it is,
Colorado will give the buyer credit for state sales tax paid up to 2.9% of the purchase price.
County Sales TaxWhen a vehicle is purchased in Grand County or from someone who has registered the vehicle in Grand County, a county sales tax of 1.3% is collected prior to titling.
City Sales TaxKremmling, Hot Sulphur Springs, and Winter Park have city sales taxes.
If both the buyer and the seller live within the town limits of Kremmling or Hot Sulphur Springs, a city sales tax of 4% is required.
If both the buyer (or lessee) and the seller live within the town limits of Winter Park, a 7% city tax is required.
City Use TaxGranby, Grand Lake and Fraser have city use taxes.
If the buyer lives within the town of Granby, a 4% use tax is collected prior to titling.
If the buyer lives within the town limits of Grand Lake, a 5% use tax is collected prior to titling.
If the buyer lives within the town limits of Fraser but the seller does not, a 4% use tax is collected prior to titling.
If the buyer and seller both live within the town limits of Fraser, a 5% use tax is collected prior to titling.
VIN InspectionsAll vehicles purchased outside the State of Colorado must have a VIN inspection prior to being titled. The only exception is for brand new vehicles with an MSO (no title has ever been issued).
