The Colorado State Forest Service offers excellent guides and informational resources so homeowners can help protect their property from or reduce the effects of a potential wildfire.
Emergency Situations Preparedness
Emergency Management is continually evaluating county hazards and seeking ways to keep our preparedness level at the highest possible stage. In accordance with the Grand County Emergency Operations Plan, training exercises conducted throughout the year help maintain staff proficiency and response capability. The following are some of our favorite links for steps you can take to prepare yourself and your home before disaster strikes.
Department of Homeland Security, for the latest in information about homeland security, the emergency preparedness level and emergency checklists.
Centers for Disease Control for information and links related to bio-terrorism and vaccination programs.
Blizzards, Debris Flows and Other Natural Challenges
The mountains of Colorado can experience severe weather and fires that can change landscapes and the way soil and water behave. A destructive fire can damage ground and make it susceptible to flood damage; heavy rains can move tons of rock and soil down mountainsides and accumulated snow can become avalanches. In 2001, Grand County recently completed a Hazard Mitigation Plan which identified these potential natural challenges and has been working to mitigate for the threat of these challenges.
The following resources are also available to help you proactively prepare for a natural challenge as well as learn what to do after a flood, debris flow or avalanche occur.
Colorado Water Conservation Board: Colorado’s Flood Protection Program
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA): Fact sheets, background information and how to help on a variety of hazards.
Red Cross: Information on emergency preparation and planning, restoration and awareness
Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT): Statewide road closure information
National Weather Service: Up to date warnings and advisories for the state
Local Emergency Planning Committee
The Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) is a county wide effort tasked to identify locations of Hazardous Materials and create emergency response plans. In Grand County we are approaching this as an All-Hazards LEPC, understanding that the identification of risks and hazards which might create a disaster and the general response planning is very similar for most disasters.
