May of each year is Law Day for the county wide 5th graders. This is a day when the 5th graders get to see first hand how County Government works. They tour and perform a mock trial in the District Court room, they learn about the responsibilities of the County Assessor , County Treasurer, Department of Motor Vehicle offices. EMS lets them climb all over an ambulance and explains what their job is, the Division of Wildlife explains the laws and do’s and dont's when it comes to Wildlife.
The Grand County Sheriff’s Department gives a tour of the jail, allowing some to be handcuffed, sit in the restraint chair, put on jail clothes as well as take their mug shot. They also toured the dispatch area, see first hand all the Special Response Team gear, and take a close up look at the Animal Control truck and gear. Hear the siren and sit in a patrol car. And ask as many questions as they want. Over a 100 of the county’s 5th graders participated in the day.
