Meeting Minutes: 3/5/2018


Updates:

  • Next meeting: April 9th 9:30 am

  • Housing

    • Housing Needs Assessment – approved

    • Housing group do kick-off meeting with housing champions – April

      • who wants to be a part of it

    • Housing Authority looking to make Housing Board through County Board

      • forming Housing advisory board

      • final decision making goes to board, but advisory group has more freedom

      • strategic planning

      • Megan Lavine Grant Foundation: Freeport McMoRan

        • housing bridging gap funding grant - $45,000, matched=$90,000

        • need representatives from municipalities on committee

        • through Grand Foundation?

  • Tourism Diversification

    • Create Here business contest – focused on Granby first

    • Developing a Local Products Catalogue

  • Wood Products

    • relationship between the industry businesses and the NF

    • IFA – Colorado Timber association

      • meetings for Medicine Bow and Route County

      • roads and accessibility

    • Businesses have a hard time connecting with the people who make decisions

    • Labor: if had enough labor (housing an issue) could have second shift now

      • paid well, but hard to get employees, cannot attract because of cost of living

    • Sell Products: locally is good but 90% of products go out of county

    • Zoning: County has changed some rules to make it easier to work

    • Loggers are aging – need to attract young people into the industry

      • Program in Maine: partner with high schools and community colleges to train young loggers – Need partners

  • Higher education

    • Professional development training at Devil's Thumb and at Snow Mountain Ranch

    • Grand County Builders Association – looking at future workforce needs, certifications, degrees, etc.

    • Career Fair tomorrow in Granby and Kremling this week

      • Career Exploration – how to get there, education and experience is needed

      • Surveys with kids to see what they are interested in for future careers

      • Reach out to businesses – provide internship possibilities

  • Anchor Businesses/Human Resources:

    • Career and Job Fair 4:30-7:00 pm at Snow Mountain Ranch

      • Spring and Fall

      • Remain consistent with 

    • Website: Sept. goal, resources required

      • Housing

      • Positions available

      • summer work 

    • Shoulder season work

  • Hirshue:

    • Employment data by month:

      • months April to August opportunity to share employees

      • opportunity to partner morning shift and evening shift to combine for a full-time position 

      • DiAnn: small businesses are requesting to be involved now

        • Request for trainings on Workman's Comp., etc.


Governance:

  • Challenges: Do you have any?  How are you working together?

    • HR group: met once for two hours between the last EDA meeting; important to add smaller work group was very helpful

      • will continue to meet every 2-3 weeks – website main goal 

      • Athena: informal chair

      • Data platform was complicated, are using a more simple form

      • how to bring in more organizations? 


        • Add Safeway, City Market, plus other employers

    • Housing:

      • focused on study underway will then give direction

      • will then have more committee meetings

      • meeting in large groups very helpful for bridging gaps: housing met with YMCA for land potentials for building, Scott with higher ed

      • Zoning: Changing code to allow for accessory dwellings and cottage home program to have pre-approved architecture plans for long-term housing

    • Lumber/Timber:

      • meeting on accessibility of timber to create front to talk directly to forest service to move forward (national and district level)

      • create workforce housing: McCall housing program to 

      • DiAnn: Denise to meet with 5 forest service members 

    • Tourism:

      • Challenge: available resources in the towns to have county-wide projects

      • met with sub-committee, no game plan

    • General Governance:

      • how to have flexibility yet keep the group moving forward

    • Report back to DiAnn to inform the county commissioners, etc.


Breakout Meetings:

  • General:

    • What are goals for 2018, 3 years, 5 years

    • Google groups and database for project management, or Asana will also be set-up

  • Wood Products:

    • Diversified products:

      • Products: CSU/State forest service have already done some work – partner with them and existing channels (High Country Forest Collaborative-HCFC)

      • Chipping operation – model after Summit County collaboration (NWCOG)

    • Stewards of the forests: FS says to be careful with verbiage.  

      • Private land and public land stewards – education

    • Accessibility to forests – roads for logging trucks, feds have cut funding for accessibility – can counties fund?

    • Goals:

      • Core Team for committee with meeting before April 9 with existing

      • Tour chipping in Summit, connect with HCFC, CSU Ext.,BLM, 

      • Succession and education for future loggers, woodworkers


Marketing/Web Portal: Ryan Wilson

  • Goals:

    • themes:

      • collaboration: workforce development/housing/lifestyle/local products

      • measuring success 

      • “Grand” Brand

    • Vehicles: advertising, press release, newsletters, GFB Website, FB, Radio, Anchor Vehicles

    • Challenges:

      • Giving Businesses a voice: provide timely response

      • No advertising budget: everyone provide one ad a year?

      • What is the Grand Story? Live/Work/Play? Elevate yourself?

    • Thoughts:

      • One idea to feature

      • What makes us different? - hard workers/opportunities available

      • What is our story in one word?

  • Web Portal


    • Target market: employees, manufacturing, 

    • General needs:

      • how do we send people to this portal?

      • Posting standards, content and images, approval management

    • Job Postings:

    • Job Forum – Discussion forum

    • Housing Postings 

    • Product catalogue

    • Tasks:

      • wireframe and outline functionality

      • promote the use of web portal

      • create functional requirements for housing and job searching

      • develop analytic tools – measure progress

      • build toolkits that are available for different targets
