[ARCHIVED] Improvements Underway at Grand County Airports

Today Grand County Airport Supervisor, Josh Schroeder, provided an update about enhancements and construction projects at Grand County’s two airports.

Grand River Aviation, LLC (GRA) assumed Fixed Base Operator (FBO) services at the Kremmling Airport (K20V) at McElroy Field in late April. Since taking over operations, GRA’s owners, Keith and Joanna Whitemarsh, have made many improvements to the terminal and grounds, and also enhanced services available to pilots.

The couple has made improvements to the FBO buildings, and continues working hard to create a welcoming environment for incoming guests. GRA is also now offering full, mobile re-fueling services, and also has a new courtesy car for pilots’ use.

At the Granby Airport (KGNB), construction work continues at Emily Warner Field. A gate was installed on the north side of the airport for access to the new hangar area. Part of a larger project to expand the taxilane and accommodate construction of new hangars in the future, the access road is expected to be completed by the first week of August.

The taxilane construction is being funded with help from a federal grant using FAA entitlements, including a $150,000 entitlement borrowed from the Limon Airport. (The FAA gives airports $150,000 entitlements every year. If an airport doesn’t use their entitlement, they can “lend” it to another airport to be “re-paid” in a future year.) The County is contributing $38,000 to the project, to be paid from the Airports’ 2021 budget. The County is providing labor and equipment for the road portion of the project.

The runway at the Granby Airport will be closed August 30 through September 19 accommodate construction within the runway safety area near the west threshold.
