[ARCHIVED] Six Positive COVID-19 Cases at Grand County Jail

SEPTEMBER 1, 2021

GRAND COUNTY, CO – On September 1, 2021, Grand County Public Health (GCPH) was informed of six confirmed positive cases of COVID-19 among inmates and employees at the Grand County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO). GCPH has begun the case investigation process and will be in contact with anyone identified as a close contact with the positive individuals. On August 31, 2021, an inmate at the Grand County Jail became symptomatic, and subsequently tested positive for COVID-19.   GCSO and GCPH worked to conduct additional testing due to the uniqueness of the jail environment.  The testing resulted in 4 additional inmates testing positive, along with one Jail staff member (Sept 1, 2021 / 6 Total Cases).

The Grand County Sheriff’s Office has been cooperating with GCPH on their case investigations and exposure minimization.  At this point in time, GCPH and the GCSO have taken the proper precautions to address and contain the threat. Because this is considered an ‘outbreak’, GCPH and Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) will continue to monitor the situation until two incubation periods (28 days) have passed with no new outbreak-related COVID-19 positive cases.

Grand County Sheriff’s Office has been training their staff, adjusting protocol, and practicing the appropriate safety procedures – all in preparation for a situation like this. Staff will continue to follow all the appropriate protective measures, ensuring the health and safety of all affected individuals.

As a precautionary measure, jail visiting and fingerprinting for concealed handgun permits (CHP) and other civil prints have been suspended until at least through September 15, 2021.

It is important to remember that it is every individual’s personal and professional responsibility to make the right decisions and hold each other to the safest standards possible.  Please continue to take preventative measures to protect yourself and others.
