GRAND COUNTY SEARCH AND RESCUE VOLUNTEER AWARDED J. HUNTER HOLLOWAY SPIRIT AWARD

GRAND COUNTY, CO – The Grand County Sheriff’s Office is honored to recognize Greg Foley with Grand County Search and Rescue who has been awarded the 2020 J. Hunter Holloway Spirit Award by the Colorado Search and Rescue Association (CSAR). The J. Hunter Holloway Spirit Award is given to individuals who truly and deeply embody the best of what it means to be a Backcountry Search and Rescue Volunteer. The Search and Rescue Conference (SARCON) did not take place in person last year due to Covid-19 concerns. The 2020 Holloway Award was recently presented at SARCON held at Colorado Mountain College in Breckenridge.

Greg started his rescue career in 1979 with Alpine Rescue Team. Due to his dedication, climbing abilities, and outdoor skills, in just four years he had achieved the rank of Rescue Member and Training Director for Alpine. In 1984 Greg moved to Fraser and was the driving force behind forming Grand County Search and Rescue, where he has served as the first President and in numerous other positions since.

In 1995 with Greg at the helm, Grand County Search and Rescue became a fully accredited member of the Mountain Rescue Association. Greg has consistently served on the region board for at least the past twelve years. At the end of this year, Greg will be term limited off the CSAR Board after eight years as a Director. However, he will continue to serve CSAR as a member of the Awards Committee, Education Committee, and as a State Backcountry SAR Coordinator.

Jeff Sparhawk, President of CSAR stated, “Personally, coming from Boulder, it’s always reassuring to hear Greg on the radio when we’re headed up to meet his crew on the Divide.”

Greg has volunteered and heroically served the community on backcountry search and rescue teams for 42 years and well over a thousand missions. His dedication, commitment and servant heart make him a true and deeply valued leader.

Sheriff Brett Schroetlin stated, “Greg Foley’s unwavering commitment to saving the lives of those he may never know, and rescuing the hurt, broken and dying in their darkest hour speaks to his deep and humble character. He is a leader, a role model and a steadfast pillar for Grand County Search and Rescue. This award could not have been given to anyone more deserving and dedicated.”
