Avalanche on Berthoud Pass Results in One Fatality

Avalanche on Berthoud Pass 12-26-2022


DECEMBER 26, 2022


GRAND COUNTY, CO- On December 26, 2022, at approximately 12:50 p.m. the Grand County Sheriff’s Office along with Grand County EMS, Grand County Search and Rescue, Alpine Search and Rescue, East Grand Fire Department, Flight For Life and the Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC) responded to a report of an avalanche on the West side of Berthoud Pass near the Town of Winter Park in unincorporated Grand County. 

The initial investigation determined that four people were caught in an avalanche slide; resulting in two of the parties becoming buried. Bystanders and family members were able to help rescue one of the people buried. The second subject, a 44-year-old male, was located and unfortunately, lifesaving measures performed by bystanders were unsuccessful and the male was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Coroner’s Office is working with the victim’s family. The decedent’s identity and cause and manner of death will be released by the Coroner when appropriate.
