1. Why can't the snow plows get to my street earlier in the day?

Even though every effort is made to clear all of our winter maintained roads as quickly as we're able after a snowfall, it is simply not possible to have every street be the first plowed. The plow routes are designed with efficiency and effectiveness in mind, and priority is given to the school and transit bus routes and main roads.

2. When can I get a Right of Way Use Permit?

Right of Way Use Permits can be obtained online or at the Granby Road and Bridge office from April 15 through October 15 (weather permitting).

3. What is Crack Sealing?

Crack sealing is a process used to seal cracks in the road surface without completely resurfacing the road. The cracks in the road are cleared of rocks and debris using an air compressor. Then, the cracks are filled with hot sealant to prevent water damage.

4. What is Chip Sealing?

Chip sealing is a resurfacing technique in which oil contact texture is sprayed over the existing asphalt on a road. Rock chips are then spread over the surface followed by a fog seal to complete the process.

Chip sealing is an effective way to improve the road's surface quickly and efficiently.

5. Why does the Road and Bridge Department work 10-hour days in the summer months?

This practice minimizes warm-up time, equipment wear from start-ups and shutdowns, and reduces travel to job site time. It also lends more continuity to ongoing projects and facilitates day planning better than the standard eight-hour day.

It is necessary to revert to the eight-hour day during the winter months to provide daily plowing and sanding services on all county maintained roadways.

6. Why don't we see the road grader for long periods of time when it is dry in the summer?

Some things are best left alone, among them, a very dry road surface. Grading roads when they are extremely dry may smooth out the washboards temporarily, but without being able to compact the road surface after grading, the washboards will quickly return, along with an increase in annoying dust.

With 778 miles of roads throughout our county, rest assured, we are out grading somewhere.

7. Why can't my road be paved?

The Road and Bridge Department is responsible for the carrying out of many tasks each and every year, and one of which is the paving of roadways. Each and every year, decisions must be made based on getting the most use from a limited amount of money, resources, and time.

Additionally, issues regarding safety, traffic volumes, maintenance, and public need (to name a few) must be considered.
