1. What is the snow load in Grand County?

The snow load varies throughout the county based upon elevation and location. Please contact the Building Department at 970-725-3255 with your legal description (subdivision or section, township, range, and elevation) to get the correct answer for your location.

2. Does Grand County require licensing of contractors or homeowners?

Yes, all general contractors and subcontractors are required to be registered in Grand County.

3. Do I need a building permit?

A building permit is required to perform any construction, alteration, moving, repair, change of use, or demolition of any building or structure.

Exceptions

• A one-story detached accessory building, which does not exceed 120 square feet, used as a storage shed, playhouse, or similar function, but only when in conjunction with a single family dwelling.
• Fences not over 6 feet high.
• Painting, carpeting, cabinets, and similar finish work.
• Concrete walks or patios not more than 12 inches above grade.

4. What is an agricultural building? Does it need a permit?

An agricultural building is a structure located on real property classified as agriculture by the Grand County Assessor that is designed, constructed, and used to house farm implements, hay grain, poultry, livestock, or other horticultural products.

This structure shall not be a place of human habitation or a place of employment where agricultural products are processed, treated or packaged, nor shall it be a place used by the public.

5. How many layers of asphalt shingles can I have on my roof?

You are able to have a total of two layers of asphalt shingles on your roof.

6. How many layers of asphalt shingles can I have under my metal roof?

You are able to have one layer of asphalt shingles under your metal roof.
